The DV lottery is a program instituted by the US government that
allows upto 55,000 persons from countries which are underrepresented in
terms of migration to the United States to qualify each year for
immigrant visas. The program can also be called ‘green card lottery’
since winners are determined through a random drawing from among the
10-12 million people who enter each year.

Application requirements
To apply for the US DV lottery program, the individual has to meet certain requirements. These requirements are:
- The applicant must come from country with low rate of immigration to the US. The following countries are excluded from the program; Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, (people’s Republic of) China (mainland born, except Taiwan and Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR), Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Phillipines, South Korea, United Kingdom/Great Britain,(except Northern Ireland) and it’s dependent territories and Vietnam.
- Applicant should hold certificate of completion of secondary school education(comparable to the US high school diploma) or a minimum of two years of training. Note that proof of a secondary school education will be needed if a lottery participant wins a green card, but it will not be needed when submitting the lottery application.
- The applicant must list partner/spouse, if married and all children under 21 years on the DV lottery application. This does not mean that all family members have to migrate to the US. After winning, the principal applicant decides who to take along or not.
