Foundation Scholars Program is a $500 million initiative to inspire
young people — particularly from Africa — to lead change through
education.
The University of
British Columbia, Canada is pleased to partner with The MasterCard
Foundation Scholars Program to provide comprehensive scholarships to
students from Sub-Saharan Africa. The Program provides access to
education for academically talented, yet economically marginalized young
people. More than 110 students from Africa will receive comprehensive
scholarships to live and learn at the University of British Columbia
thanks to a $25 million grant from The MasterCard Foundation. The first
cohort of Scholars will arrive at UBC this fall. Over the next 10 years,
UBC expects to welcome 77 undergraduate and 35 master’s degree students
through the Program.
UBC is among the first Canadian universities to join The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program and one of only 15 institutions in the world participating in the $500 million global education initiative.
Eligibility:
To be eligible for consideration for The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at UBC, students must be nominated. (Nominations are closed for the 2013-14 academic year). Nomination packages will be available in Fall 2013.
Scholars in the Program have a demonstrated commitment to giving back to their communities and develop the leadership needed to contribute to social and economic transformation across the continent.
Eligible groups: Citizens and residents of any sub-Saharan African country
Participating Institutions: University of British Columbia, Canada
Fields of study: All development related fields are eligible – you may need to contact the institution for these courses
Number of awards: More than 110 awards will be given over a 10-year period.
Over the next 10 years, 77 undergraduate and 35 master’s degree students will be awarded this scholarship.
Sponsorship duration: Whole duration of the program
Scholarship benefits:
The University partners with the MasterCard foundation to grant $25M Scholarships for African students.
Selected students will receive a scholarship equivalent to the costs related to attaining a Bachelor’s degree, including travel, tuition, textbooks, housing, food, and living expenses. You will also receive financial, academic, social, and post-graduation support which will enable you to build experiences and competencies critical for academic success.
Method of Application:
Interested students must be nominated. However, nominees must also complete the online application for academic admission to UBC.
