WAAW Foundation Undergraduate Scholarships for Female African Students

Scholarship Description: The Working to Advance African Women (WAAW) Foundation is a U.S. based non-profit organization focused on Working to Advance African Women. The mission of WAAW to increase the pipeline of African women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) related fields, and work to ensure that this talent is engaged in African innovation.
WAAW has announced the next round of its scholarship program for African women for 2013/2014 academic session, offering $500/year for need-based female African students admitted to a University, College or institute of higher learning in Africa. Scholarships are renewable annually, following proof of the student’s continued academic performance.

For Which Country: Africa (Applicants’ Home Country)

Eligibility: WAAW foundation’s annual scholarship initiative is aimed at supporting need based African female STEM-focused college education. Criteria for eligibility includes:
  • Female students of African origin living in Africa, less than 40 years, who have gained undergraduate admission to an institution of higher learning in Africa and studying a STEM related course.
  • The candidate must demonstrate financial need and excellent academic record.
  • Special consideration is given to orphans, underprivileged students, girls impacted by HIV and students in the first or second year of study.
             

Eligible Groups: Female citizens of ANY African country, living and studying in Africa


Participating Institutions: Any African University, College or institute of higher learning. See the Top 100 Universities and Colleges in Africa.


Fields of Study: Courses offered in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)

Sponsorship Duration: Scholarship is a onetime fund but is renewable annually, following proof of the student’s continued academic performance.


Scholarship Benefits: WAAW Foundation awards annual Scholarships to students who demonstrate need and prove their status as full time students in a STEM related course in an African University. Recipients will become WAAW Ambassadors* in their respective communities.

Scholarship recipients will receive an award of $500 for the 2013/14 academic year, or the equivalent in their country’s local currency. Scholarship recipients may reapply for renewal the following year, with proof of continued excellent academic performance.

  1. Application form filled out completely. We will only accept online applications this year. NO PAPER APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED*.
  2. Personal and Contact Information.
  3. Educational Information
  4. Responses to essay questions that address career goals. and how you expect the WAAW scholarship will assist in your education.
  5. Two academic/professional references. Note recommendations and transcripts ARE NOT REQUIRED AT THIS TIME. ONLY after a candidate has been shortlisted.

ONLY Shortlisted candidates will be required to send the following additional items in order to complete the application process:
  1. 2 references; one MUST be written by a professor from your institution of study and the other from an academic supervisor/advisor or mentor. Reference forms should be downloaded from http://www.waawfoundation.org/scholarship/2011_ScholarshipReferenceLetter.pdf and emailed to references@waawfoundation.org.
  2. A copy of a current signed and sealed transcript from your University to be mailed to: WAAW Foundation Scholarship. P.O. Box 1691. Wylie. Texas 75098.
  3. A copy of the student’s School identity card. emailed to us.
DEADLINES: WAAW will start accepting 2013/2014 applications from August 1, 2013 through midnight of October 30, 2013. Applications submitted prior to the open date or after the close date will not be received nor reviewed.

PLEASE NOTE: WAAW will only accept online applications this year! Scholarship applications are reviewed by the WAAW foundation Scholarship Committee, and awards are announced at the end of February 2013.
