Common Study abroad requirements

All colleges and universities have minimum entry requirements for admission into their schools. These requirements vary from one school to another and as an applicant, you must meet these requirements to be considered for admission into their institutions. I’m preparing this post because lots of my readers keep sending me mails asking about the minimum entry requirements for most colleges and universities. Like I said earlier, these entry requirements vary and depends on factors such as; study program, study level etc.

Lets now look at the minimum requirement to study at the undergraduate level
Undergraduate study requirements

  • High school result

To study at this level, most universities will want you to have a minimum of a high school/secondary school diploma or it’s equivalent that is recognised in their country. You should  have good grades of not less than a 60% in all relevant subjects. Note that in addition to this, some schools may require additional results like SATs and A’LEVELs, for engineering and design courses,  especially if you want to study in places like the UK and US.

  • Health/medical certificate

Since you are going to study in a country with different climate, food etc, it’s important that you carry out some medical examination to see if your health permits you to study in this new country. A medical doctor will recommend some laboratory test such as blood and x-ray so as to accertain your health condition and will a  report on that. This medical examination is so important as some universities will want to see the report before admitting you into their school.

  • International passport

Most schools will want to see the data page of your international passport, if you’ll need a visa to travel to their school.

Postgraduate study  requirements

  • First degree result

To study at this level, students will be expected to have completed their first degree program and obtain the result together with the transcript showing all grades and scores. Most schools require students to have a minimum CGP of 3.00 out of a total 5.00. Please contact the school you wish to study directly for specific information on this.

  • Statement of purpose/admission essay

This is simply an essay you write about yourself, educational background, skills hobbies and study plan. This essay has to be properly written, since its what the school uses to select candidates for admission into their school. I have written lots of articles on this, you can click here to see samples of this essay.

  • Reference  letters

Somebody has to write a letter attesting to your conduct. Most universities will require that the letter be written by your lecturer or employer (if you are working) and e-mailed to them directly. In writing this letter, the person should talk about your academics, skills, and other good qualities of yours.

  • International passport

Like I said earlier, some schools may want to see the data page of your international passport during the admission process. So you have to scan it clearly and send to them together with other documents on time.

  • Health/medical certificate

If the school wants to know the status of your health, they will request for a medical report prepared by a qualified doctor based on the medical examination he has carried out on you. Note that there universities that will want to see this report during the admission process.

These are the most important things you need for your admission into any college or university abroad. Since, different schools have different admission requirements, its advisable that you contact the school you want to study for specific admission requirements. Thanks
